

I think that most people don't take into account the software side of things. Also, duplex scanning is an obvious must.


Although I don't have specific printer/scanner suggestions (aside from a personal plug for Brother ADS-2800W or Epson ES-400 for documents if it's pictures you want to scan, the only scanners I would trust with the task of storing your memories like in the Epson Perfection series - I know they are expensive, but you can find used ones for 1/2-3/4 of the price on Ebay or local online auction houses), it's imperative you get a scanner that has some sort of "multi-feed detector" that can pause a scan job if more than one page is fed through the machine (instead of scrapping the entire scan job, like most printers do.).
